January 17, 2025: Cavanagh Responds

Cavanagh responds to Objections to Pit Proposal

Hello Everyone,

Some of you may be aware that new documents for the Highland Line pit proposal, including revisions to the site plan and additional documents, were made available to the public yesterday.  These documents can be found at http://cavanagharaapprovals.com/highlandLinePit/index.html under the “Public Response Package (January 2025)” tab.

If you provided comments to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Cavanagh as part of the Aggregate Resources Act application process (deadline was June 5, 2023) then you should have received an email from Cavanagh’s planner Neal DeRuyter outlining the changes to the application.

No action is required at this time aside from reading the additional documentation to understand the revisions and additional material.  Mr. DeRuyter indicated Objection Forms will be provided in February to everyone who commented as part of the initial phase of the process.  Once the Objection Forms are received in February, you will be provided with instructions and the deadline (regulation 20 days) to return your form with any outstanding concerns.  You must respond by the deadline for your concerns to be considered a formal objection to the application, otherwise your concerns will be deemed to have been satisfied by the revisions.

Even if you did not send a letter as part of the Aggregate Resource Act licence application process in June of 2023, you may still participate in the process.  Changes to the zoning and official plans are also required to allow the opening of an aggregate pit. Lanark Highlands Township and Lanark County have yet to vote on the requested amendments for the subject land. It is anticipated the township and county will provide notice in the near future of public meeting(s) and next steps regarding this application.  You are encouraged to write a letter to Lanark Highlands Township or to Lanark County, since this process is ongoing. As well, there will be opportunity to participate in a public meeting and/or provide an additional letter with any outstanding concerns that were not satisfied by the revisions.

If you haven’t written a letter to Lanark Highlands Township or Lanark County, there is still time!  It is our understanding that comments will be received at least up until the time of the next public meeting (date still unknown), which everyone will be made aware of and strongly encouraged to attend.

Letters can still be sent to:

Lanark Highlands LHclerk@Lanarkhighlands.ca

Lanark County info@Lanarkcounty.ca

Friends of Lanark Highlands plans to hold an information session in February (date and location to be determined) for anyone who would like to discuss the revisions to the application and the related materials and process.

We will keep you informed.  Thank you for your ongoing interest and support!
